Rules on "Self-Promotion"

I’m planning to publish a blog post that chronicles my journey of returning to Mac after 20+ years on Windows. I think it might interest some of the TidBITs community, not only for the perspective of migrating two decades of computing habits to macOS but also for my summary of my early computing days on Classic Mac OS.

I don’t see any rules prohibiting “self-promotion.” However, I wanted to check if it would be OK to start a TidBITS Talk thread with a link to my article for anyone interested in reading or discussing it.

(Note: I am a one-time TidBITS contributor all the way back in 1999.)

@ace always has the final word, but I’ve occasionally shared posts from my personal blog.

As long as the content is relevant to TidBITS, I suspect it won’t be a problem.

@Shamino is absolutely correct—there’s nothing wrong with self-promotion as long as the content is related to the kinds of things we write about in TidBITS and you’re not selling anything. And even if you are, it may be fine, but I do like it when people check with me first.

I’ll be interested to read this, I think. I started on TRS-80 in high school, with exposure to ][+ and PowerMac when I visited my dad. I used OS/2 until IBM gave up on it, then was stuck with Windows. I switched to Mac personally when the first Intel-based macs came out - it was either Tiger or Leopard, and I’ve been almost exclusively Mac at home since that point. I’ve been doing system administration for 35+ years, almost entirely on Windows with some linux. I did provide occasional Mac support for the designers. Recently switched jobs doing CyberSecurity, and for the first time my new company let me get an M3 MBP instead of forcing me to use a Windows system. It’s much more efficient for me, and PowerShell 7 works well for most of my cross-platform scripting work. I still support Active Directory (so I have to remote to a server with PS 5.1), but supporting Entra ID works just fine with PS7 from my Mac.
One of the best things about joining the TidBITs community (and especially TidBITs talk) is the opportunity to learn from others with significant technical acumen. Getting new perspectives is always really helpful - it helps to keep me from getting tunnel vision!

I expect to publish the post early next week. Although I was in IT and then software development for 20 years, the focus will be on home/personal use.
