For my purposes, the Latest link gets the job done nicely. It even shows me a nice delineator separating posts I saw last time I was here vs. everything new since. In fact, my bookmark to TidBITS Talk is in fact the Latest page.
Latest shows both read and unread topics, so I think I’d still miss things that had fallen below the fold. Plus, both Unseen and Latest force me to go back to an index page and load topics in new tabs, and when I do more than a few at a time, Discourse gets mad at me for acting like a bot.
What I like about the New & Unread list at the bottom of each post is that I can just keep reading the next unread topic with a single click. I don’t care what order they come in—I want to read everything. But if I don’t visit quite often enough New & Unread misses some new topics for some reason. I’ll have to look into that.

Same here. I take Adam’s point as well, but I read TidBITS (in a web browser) every morning, so I just keep clicking the bold topics (i.e., unread) until there are a bunch of grays (read) in a row, then stop. Works for me.

You still get blue dots below the fold indicating you missed something in there.
I always open all threads in new tabs at once (in Safari) but have yet to encounter a bot complaint.

Well, that’s interesting. If I open more than about four or five topics in new tabs, I’ll get a 429 error about doing things too fast. I wonder if that’s because I’m an admin and thus my page loads are different?
FWIW, I typically had been reading TidBITS by opening several topics in new tabs at once, and then a few weeks (maybe months?) ago, I started seeing the 429 errors, too. I had not seen them before.
I may be mistaken, but I think it started roughly after one of Discourse updates. In any case, I figured it was an anti-abuse feature that you had enabled, and now I just avoid opening too many tabs at once.
