Questions about moving from 1Password 6 to KeePassXC

MacOS 26.4.1 showed me a notification that 1Password 6 is not going to be usable in future OSes; Learn More led to a page about Rosetta going away.

I stuck with v6 for a number of reasons including familiarity, not wanting to subscribe, and increasing complexity of the product including lock-in and connection to cloud/internet requirements. For me, local and non-subscription is best.

So I’m almost ready to make the jump from 1Password 6 to open source KeePass XC. Looked at Quick Start and User Manual and did some online searching but still have some questions, below. I did an experimental import of an .opvault file.

I saw the Josh Centers article here and some other Topics on KPXC.

  • I’ve imported the 1Password .opvault file, which happily included attachments, but spot checked a few Entries and found that at least one did not transfer correctly, it showed a date entry that does not match the 1PW item of the same name. Others’ experience with this? will I need to proofread all the entries …? Possibly there is some date formatting issue in 1PW that didn’t translate right. I think I will have to slowly prune the 1PW entries or maybe make a new database and import a csv version of the 1PW data.
  • What are the ‘expired’ entries (in strikethrough text), that is, how does KPXC decide that, I don’t recall that in the 1Password source? It is showing only 23 of them out of over 1,800 1PW Items.
  • A 3-column view, similar to 1PW 6.x does not seem possible in KPXC, or can that be customised somehow? I only see a few Theme options in the View menu and Compact Mode as a display option.
  • If I want to access the database from Mac, iPhone/Pad (using KeePassium) and Linux, without going thru the internet, could I for example safely and securely store it on a volume connected to my router, or another mac on the local network?
  • For Passphrases, additional word lists ie in .txt file format, can be added but it appears the user has to pick one of the lists. Anyone know how to choose a mix, ie French and English? is it as simple as say downloading two word lists and copy pasting the contents into one combined list in .txt format, then selecting that as the word list?
  • Bonus question: I know I have gotten the content of 1PW relatively easy out into a pdf and also into an rtf file in TextEdit, but cannot remember how to do it. Online searching and random ideas have not worked so far. Anyone know how?

Update 4 June:

After many hours the only import glitches (going alphabetically thru >1300 items; reached letter K so far) are in 1PW Passport items, “date of birth” field. KPXC shows a completely different date. Dates of issue and expiry fields, entered in same date format at date of birth, are correctly imported. Weird that one of the first spot checked items had a flaw!

Seems some 1PW items had a field called Expires and those have imported correctly.

There are word lists out there on the interwebs, formatted in various ways but it seems doable to have a list with mixed language words.

1PW 6’s Print command in 26.4 will only show the first item, even if “All Items” was selected. My workaround was to open the 1PW data on a Sierra OS Mac and the print to pdf worked fine from there. IIRC, in the past I also was able to select all in the pdf and copy paste into TextEdit but haven’t done that this time around. And yes, I promise to store those securely ;-)

The other questions will take more research but I need to keep plowing through the data to finish the move first.
