Predicting When We’ll See OS 26 Updates

On his Eclectic Light Company blog, Howard Oakley has pored over the past two years of macOS releases to predict when we might see scheduled macOS 26 Tahoe updates—and, by extension, updates to Apple’s other operating systems, which typically come out on the same day. He suggests:

If Tahoe follows the same pattern [as Sonoma and Sequoia], you can expect releases to occur on the following dates:

  • 26.0 – 15 September 2025
  • 26.1 – 27 October 2025
  • 26.2 – 15 December 2025
  • 26.3 – 26 January 2026
  • 26.4 – 30 March 2026
  • 26.5 – 11 May 2026
  • 26.6 – 27 July 2026
  • 26.7 – 14 September 2026

I sincerely hope Howard is a bit off because he has scheduled each date for Monday, and it’s stressful to cover a full OS update on a Monday while I’m putting the issue together. Apple sometimes switches days without a clear pattern, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these updates arrive on different days.

Hm well I was kind of eager to help other TBers figure things out with 26 but am not a .0 updater kind of fellow so The Joy of Helping might just have to wait til round about Time Change/Halloween…

In the past, the .1 update came out in early to mid October, and the .2 update 3 nor 4 weeks later. I hope that will be tyhe case with Tahoe.

In another discussion thread, someone mentioned that the first beta of the .1 update was being released shortly, so maybe early to mid October could be accurate.

Well, it looks like the time line mentioned both at the beginning and my post above is being accelerated. The OS 26.0.1 update was released today:

That’s good, and kind of not surprising. I’m not ready yet anyway, as SuperDuper! is still being modified/tested with Tahoe. A Tahoe version of Onyx has been released, and I will down load it shortly. Have not seen anything else about my other third party apps I use and Tahoe compatibility.

26.0.1 not 26.1, just to clarify.

Thanks. I actually corrected it to 26.0.1, but I suspect when you saw it, it was still 26.1.

No one can predict when Apple will release 26.x.y updates because they usually come out in response to show-stopping security vulnerabilities or bugs.

True. But past experience has shown that the dates mentioned at first seemed to be later than usual. As it us, OS 26.1 beta has been in testing already, and it seems it will be released next week, which is more like the past.

Looks like I was mistaken about the release of OS 26.1. Seems like it is still in beta testing, and in fact just saw this: Update October 14, 2025: Apple released the macOS 26.1 beta 3. Maybe there is much more to fix at this time. Wonder if that means V26.1 could be stable enough? For me, still have to wait on the status of SuperDuper!. Meanwhile, OS 15.7.1 Sequoia is behaving just fine: solid, stable, and all my third party applications are compatible with it.

macOS 15.1 went through 7 developer betas and 2 RC’s before release, so no surprise that 26.1 is at beta 3. I wouldn’t look for release until at least the end of the month.

I don’t remember 15.1 being released so late last October, but that seems to be the case for 26.1. That could also mean that 26.2 will take a while to appear.

October 28, 2024, to be exact, with an updated build for new hardware on the 30th. 15.2 was December 11.

Thanks for the reminder. Did not remember it was that late. Looks like updates for Tahoe is on a similar tract. Again, though, no rush for me, as 1) there is nothing enticing in Tahoe that I need, and 2) SuperDuper! will, most likely, need to be updated for Tahoe compatibility.

I truly hope an update will fix some of the glaring silly-ness of the gui.

Apart from being aesthetically ugly, how could anyone think it was smart to have a scroll bar intersecting a resizing corner? It’s pure stupidity and catches/annoys me EVERY day.

Well if this is right, I should be ready to update in February 2026…
