Is it me or is it really hard to press down and turn counter clockwise on AirTags’ covers to open them up to replace their CR2032 batteries?
Or do I suck?
Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon.

I’ve not had a problem.
I haven’t found it to be a problem. You might try holding it with both hands so you can push down and rotate the cover with both of your thumbs at once.
It is sometimes hard for me too. If the opposing hands method @kolepard suggested doesn’t work, you might try putting one of those “jar gripper” pads on a counter, and pressing the AT against that with your palm.
Instead of trying to directly press on the battery cover, hold the AirTag between your two palms and twist in opposite directions.
Thanks all. I had to get someone else do it for me. Even he had a hard time. He had to use one of those suctions to do it! :O
Same here. Not always, but sometimes. Maybe it’s the individual AirTag.
I’m on team “Why #$!#!@ won’t these things open!”
Tried to remove batteries could only get one to open after a struggle.
Almost as bad as trying to open the battery cover on the original Magic Mouse.
Yeah, I’ve had problems with it. My wife and I have passed it back and forth trying to get it until it comes loose.
Though one time I spent about ten minutes trying to rotate it counter-clockwise and finally determined that it had already turned as far as needed… Doh!
Perhaps it depends on the battery. Some brands might be slightly thicker and exert more pressure. I’ve not had any issues.
The battery is whatever came with 4 pack AirTags (MX542AM/A model) from over 2/15/2023.
Maybe, but if that’s the case, then they’re poorly manufactured. A “CR 2032” battery has a very specific size: 20 (±0.25) mm diameter, 3.2mm thick.

A pain to open. There’s no way my wife could and I had to struggle. The combo of size, slippiness and tightness. A bit of a knack. I’d second the jar lid gripper cloth recommendation.
And, a very thin layer of vaseline around the perimeter of the threads will help with this in the future. Same thing we do on outside light bulbs from days of old. Very very thin. Patrick
Had no problem opening it the first time but extremely hard closing it. I keep getting notice that the Tag needs battery replaced even right after replacing it because the cap cannot get closed properly! Not sure if only one of the tiny latches are catching or just not making proper contact?
Never had an Apple product that was this difficult to use!!!
Or maybe use Blu Tack top & bottom and peel it off afterwards?
Two thumbs approach is good I also use the flat of one hand and two fingers of the other hand, it is sometimes so easy and others not, still love them though.
I haven’t had to change the batteries in mine very often, but I remember the last time I was dreading it thinking it was a pain. Then when I was twisting the back off and struggling I realized it was already open. It wasn’t hard at all — you only have to turn it a tiny bit. It feels like it’s screwed on and should take a lot more turning, but it doesn’t. So it could be you’re making it more work than it is. At least that was my most recent experience.
