New Topic should default to "TidBITS Talk"

When I, a mere user, click “New Topic” the default choice should be “Tidbits Talk” and I don’t know that “Article Comment” should even be an option.

I can’t prevent people from creating posts in other categories, but I’ve rearranged the order of the categories in the pop-up menu and tweaked the descriptions to make this more clear.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. There is currently no default category when creating a new post, and I think there should be and it should be “TidBITS Talk” instead of having to select a category from the drop down.

It doesn’t look like there’s a setting for that. If you’re in a category already, that category is used automatically, but if you’re at the top level, you’ll have to select a category first.
