Since updating to the latest version of Sequoia, Mail has been problematic. A couple of basic things don’t seem to work anymore + a persistent issue with the Bridge app. for Proton Mail:
Rules no longer work reliably for sorting msgs. into mailboxes. I tried deleting and redoing the ones that weren’t working, but that didn’t help.
Weird problems with forwarding or opening a new message. If I change my mind and want to delete even a blank message, it won’t delete until I quit and restart Mail.
Sending messages often takes several tries, with an error message on failing to send that says, “The attempt to read data from the server “127.0.0.1” failed.” I have to just keep trying until it sends, sometimes 5-8 times. This happens both with messages via Proton and my other email address using a different SMTP. For awhile this problem seemed resolved, but I (mistakenly) followed a prompt to update Bridge today, and now it’s back. I tried their proposed solution of changing the port for sending and that ameliorated the problem some (it took fewer tries to send, but still >1), but now it’s back to needing 3-8 tries per message.
Another issue with 15.4: Syncing of Messages on my Mac with messages on my phone. This used to be reliable, albeit sometimes slow. But now I have a week or more of phone msgs. that never made it onto Messages on my Mac.
That’s the part that jumps out at me. You may be aware that’s the localhost address. Unless you’re running your own mail server on the same machine from which you’re trying to send the mail, I can’t imagine why Mail is expecting a response from localhost.
Do you have more than one From: address defined? If so, is the correct one selected (I’ve seen it change from one new message to the next)? Have you gone over the Server Settings tab at Mail > Settings… > Accounts > [account you’re trying to send from] ?
Just some thoughts…I’m no Mail expert, but there are some in this forum who can hopefully chime in with further thoughts.
Right, that’s the way the Proton Mail bridge app works - it manages the encryption/decryption to Proton Mail while allowing a local mail client to fetch and send mail.
Proton Mail Bridge continues to work fine for me on 15.4. I haven’t had to fiddle with it for a long time now.
Many thanks. I don’t have my own mail server and am pretty careful about using the right SMTP for each of my 2 outgoing addresses. Mail can only send from one at a time to my knowledge, as there’s a pull down menu for the From address.
Looking at the server settings panel, it shows 127.0.0.1 as the host name for both incoming and outgoing mail from Proton (and a different one for the address I’m writing from now). This would have to be a setting they provided. Would it be cleaner to delete that? The checkbox that says, ‘Automatically manage connection settings’ is also checked for both.
Does any of that help clarify what’s likely going on here?
I have zero experience with Proton Mail, but it looks like @ddmiller does (just above). I’d go with what he says, and assume that setting is correct. Sorry for the misdirection!
