Is anyone else frustrated by the App Store highlighting what it thinks is “Most Helpful”? Often the featured review is several years old, generally worthless for an app that is being regularly updated. I see an app that is overall rated 4 stars, and I have to make an effort to see “Most Recent” reviews, which turn out to be mostly 1 star because the latest release was a disaster or the developer has stopped updating the app. THAT information is most helpful.

The problem is that “Most Helpful” is determined by how many people reading the reviews actually bother to click the link indicating that it was helpful. The vast majority of people don’t bother, regardless of whether the review was actually helpful to them, making this a more or less useless metric. The reason old reviews tend to show up first in this sort is that the number of people rating reviews has dropped off dramatically over the years, so current reviews rarely get marked as helpful by anyone.
