Today, I noticed the red alert on my Malwarebytes icon and clicked on it. After a warning that I could stop having to manually scan if I update to premium (which I already have), it then showed all was well, but it wanted to add Web Protection. It required more System permissions so it could analyze traffic (so it’s more than a browser extension); it wanted to be an Endpoint Security extension. That must be new in macOS 15.4.1 as I’ve had MWB for several years and it’s never asked about that.
I enabled the extension and the toggle in MWB for Web Protection, and began to get a stream of notifications about blocking—not domain names but IP addresses. The stream of notifications would pause for a few seconds, then resume. I realized that it was trying to be a substitute for Lulu, which gives me more control anyway, so I turned off Malwarebytes Web Protection. I retained the Endpoint Security extension. I mean, isn’t that what MWB is for—Endpoint Security?
I realize that antivirus and antimalware is a hot-button discussion topic, so I should say: if you think it’s ok to use Malwarebytes (especially if you use it yourself), but have an opinion on its configuration which would be helpful to me, please share. I really don’t want to resurrect the debate which we have every few years on the general topic, LOL.
