macOS Sonoma 14.6.1 keeps getting notification of upgrade available

Version 14.7 (23H122) may be beta, but it seems very stable. When the solution sometimes suggested for instabilities in the released versions is to upgrade to Sequoia, choosing settings which allow beta downloads and getting 14.7 might be preferable. Alternatively, how can we tell it is beta? Considering the mess Apple has had for the last year or so with software updates and instabilities in released versions, it seems hard to tell.

And since installing 14.7 I have had no suggestions to install anything more.

Using beta system software on a computer you can’t afford to have trashed is a dangerous approach, and one that I would never recommend.

Additionally, how can you get it off of the beta upgrade track once you elect to do this? The last time I looked into it, it could only be done easily or quickly, but not both. If you change the system configuration, you won’t get a non-beta install until the next release with a version (major only or minor?) greater than the beta you’re running.

Or alternatively, wipe and reinstall everything. But will Migration Assistant work to migrate content from a beta system?

If you want to do this, please make a point of finding out all these details before you jump in.

Caution when considering running beta versions is commendable, I agree.

But back to the topic of getting surprising upgrade notifications, yesterday I got one. Since others are reporting notifications when the offered “new” software appears unchanged, I thought what the heck, I’ll install it and see what I get. Before changing anything I wrote down a few version numbers so I could see if afterwards they were different. This is beta software and so should not be discussed. I will say that some of the builds were changed.

This tells me a couple of things. First, even just a few days before release of the next macOS version, Apple is still working on the outgoing version. Good for Apple! I do not know if the changes were for anything more than improved security, but I suppose anything is possible. Second, at least in my case, the upgrade notice was to be valid. I wonder if that is true for others.

That’s an unrelated issue. What people here are discussing is a bug where a notification appears claiming that updates are available, but then System Settings says there is actually nothing available to update. That’s entirely different from what you’re reporting (which AFAICT is normal behavior when you’re on beta).
