macOS 26.4 betas

For those who are adventurous, the first Tahoe 26.4 developer and public betas are now available.

I have an external SSD onto which I can install and play around with the beta releases.

But be forewarned:
The first 26.4 developer beta has rendered all older drives formatted to HFS+ as READ ONLY. The drives still appear on the desktop, but you can’t write data to them any more.

When I tried running disk utilty’s first aid, du reported that the repairs had “failed”.

I don’t know if this is true for the public beta release (can’t install it because software update says 26.4 is “up to date”… for now).

I found that if I booted back to my “regular OS” (Sequoia), my HFS+ volumes are back to normal.
But boot to 26.4 and… again… read only.

Could we be reaching the point where Apple has decided to deprecate HFS+, just as HFS before it?

It’s a bug with the beta.

…and mentioned in the Release Notes:

External Media

Known Issues

  • HFS external media might fail to mount automatically. (168672160)
  • Workaround: For macOS only, use CLI tool diskutil mount to attach the relevant disk device.

Hyperkey using Karabiner-Elements / Homerow etc. is no longer working in this beta for internal keyboards, external keyboards are working fine.
