M6 and M5 Ultra Debut in Updated Mac mini and Mac Studio

We knew the M6 chip was coming, and it seemed likely Apple would produce an M5 Ultra chip, since it skipped the M4 generation for the Ultra. But a late August release was unexpected and suggests Apple is clearing the decks before the early September announcements of new iPhone and Apple Watch models.

In a trio of announcements, Apple unveiled the M6 and M5 Ultra chips, revealed new Mac mini configurations with the M6 and M5 Pro, and raised the Mac performance ceiling with new Mac Studio models that use the M5 Max and M5 Ultra. The new Macs are available for pre-order now, with deliveries starting on 22 September 2026. We’ll see how well Apple can meet the demand with quick shipments.

I’ll admit that my eyes glazed over somewhat when I read these Apple chip and Mac announcements because there are so many picky details surrounding performance. If a friend who uses the Mac but doesn’t care about the details asked me about the changes, I’d say, “Everything is faster, but also more expensive.” For those who want the specifics, let’s dive in.

M6 and M5 Ultra

The M6 chip is the latest update in the evolution of Apple silicon. It’s the first chip to use a 2-nanometer process. Although that’s more of a marketing term than anything, chips using a 2-nanometer process can be faster and more power-efficient than those relying on a 3-nanometer process, as the M3 through M5 did.

Internally, the M6 features a “larger 12-core CPU complex with the world’s fastest CPU core, a larger 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and up to 170 GB/s of unified memory bandwidth.” That’s two more CPU and GPU cores than the M5, a single 16-core Neural Engine, and 10% more memory bandwidth.

The “CPU complex” is interesting. Previously, M-series CPUs differentiated between “performance” and “efficiency” cores, but with the M5, Apple renamed its highest performance cores from “performance” to “super.” Then, in the M5 Pro and M5 Max, Apple introduced a new “performance” core that sits between “super” and “efficiency” cores. The super cores focus on single-threaded performance, the performance cores handle multithreaded workloads, and the efficiency cores manage everyday background tasks.

The M6 has 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores, whereas the M5 had 4 super cores and 6 efficiency cores. Apple isn’t specifying how much faster the M6 is than the M5 in single-threaded super-core tasks, beyond saying it’s the “world’s fastest.” However, it’s 1.2x faster in multithreaded performance. Rather than repeat Apple’s benchmarks in running text, here’s a chart (thank you, Claude) that will give you a better sense of how the M6 compares to the M5 and the much older M1.

The M5 Ultra, Apple’s most powerful chip ever, comes with other architectural innovations. As with previous Ultra generations, the M5 Ultra combines two M5 Max chips, but since they’re dual-die chips, the result is Apple silicon’s first quad-die architecture. (The M3 Ultra connected two single-die M3 Max chips.) There’s no practical benefit to users in a quad-die architecture, but it’s a huge win for Apple. The larger the die, the more difficult and expensive it is to manufacture because a defect can ruin the entire die. Dividing the design into smaller dies can substantially improve manufacturing yield and reduce costs.

The M5 Ultra’s specs are insane. It has an up-to-36-core CPU with 12 super cores and 24 performance cores, an up-to-80-core GPU, a 32-core Neural Engine, a more capable Media Engine, and support for up to 512 GB of memory with 1.2 TB/s of unified memory bandwidth. The M5 Ultra dispenses with efficiency cores entirely, devoting all CPU resources to super and performance cores. Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro

Look at Apple hopping on the AI bandwagon with this press release headline: “Apple’s new Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro, delivers a massive leap in AI performance, supercharging the leading desktop for always-on agentic computing.” Or just use it as a normal Mac like the rest of us.

Remember what I said about “faster, but more expensive?” Here’s where that starts. The M6 model of the Mac mini compares extremely favorably to the previous M4 model, and those with older Mac mini models will see even more performance gains. Have another chart.

Want more performance yet? For that, you’ll need a Pro chip, but since the M6 just debuted, the next best option is the M5 Pro. Apple provides no comparisons between the M6 and M5 Pro, but based on previous generations, the M5 Pro should substantially outperform the M6 in multithreaded and GPU-intensive tasks, even though the M6 is newer. Here’s how it compares to the M4 Pro and M2 Pro models.

The only other changes are connectivity improvements: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support, thanks to Apple’s N1 wireless chip. Upgraded 2.5Gb Ethernet is now standard with a 10Gb option available. The M6 Mac mini supports Thunderbolt 4, while the M5 Pro version has Thunderbolt 5.

That’s the faster. How about the more expensive? You’ll remember that Apple raised the price of the Mac mini several months ago (see “Apple Raises Prices for Many Products,” 26 June 2026), with the base M4 model jumping from $599 to $799 and the M4 Pro model increasing from $1399 to $1599. Both new releases add $100 to the price, so the M6 Mac mini starts at $899 and the M5 Pro starts at $1699. Just imagine how much larger Apple’s profits would be if the company hadn’t absorbed some of the AI-driven memory price increases.

Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra

For users who care far more about performance than price, Apple has made the Mac Studio even more compelling. Along with the Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity improvements from Apple’s N1 chip, the new M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips should meet the needs of the most demanding workloads. Apple says that “filmmakers can color-grade uncompressed 8K footage in real time, VFX artists can render complex simulations, and data scientists can train local AI models on expansive datasets.” Plus, new genlock support over USB-C enables precise synchronization between a display and camera—including iPhone 17 Pro—for video professionals who need frame-accurate capture (this is true of the new Mac mini, too).

Apple also notes that multiple Mac Studio systems can be clustered using Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA (remote direct memory access) to create a shared memory pool for running frontier-class open-weight AI models. The company says that a cluster of four Mac Studios provides 3x faster AI inference (responding to queries) than a single system.

I’m obliged to note that my PhD-candidate son would point out that, in academia, everything revolves around Nvidia’s GPUs and associated CUDA parallel computing software platform. The main win of the Mac Studio is the amount of unified memory that can be made available for AI tasks.

Anyway, if you’re considering an M5 Max Mac Studio, here’s how Apple says it stacks up against the previous models.

As with the Mac mini, Apple provides no comparisons between the M5 Max and M5 Ultra models, but it’s safe to say that the M5 Ultra is in a class by itself.

In terms of pricing, the M5 Max Mac Studio with 36 GB of memory starts at $2499, which is unchanged from the June increase. Admittedly, it was only $1999 before that price bump, but it’s still nice not to get hit with another increase. The M5 Ultra model with 96 GB of memory starts at $5499, up $200 from the June price and $1500 more than the pre-June price. There are too many variables to tease out what additional memory tiers cost, but note that 512 GB configurations of the M5 Ultra Mac Studio won’t be available until October.

Remember the days of big fan fare?

So I looked up my M2 Max (64GB/2TB) and compared to the new M5 Max (same specs aside from processor and cores).
Its 60% more in cost than my M2 Max was.
M2 Max was $2700. It was the 12 core at the time, not the 16
M5 Max is $4300. That is 18 Core, 64GB and 2TB storage.

Ok, so its 3 years old now since my M2 Max. Its still doing its work. I think when the M7 Max is released, I will think about upgrade but… at 20% increase a year… that means $5700. Likely more since by then, I’ll want 4TB storage, and 128GB memory.

C’est la vie!

So I guess it is time to quit stalling and replace my 2017 iMac.

Previously I was considering either a Mac mini or a Mac Studio. After the June price hikes, I settled on the Mac mini.

I’m having trouble comparing the chips, since the cores are all different now.

M4 Pro Mac mini

  • 4.5 GHz
  • 14 cores (10 performance, 4 efficiency)
  • 20 core GPU
  • 16 core Neural Engine

so is the base M5 Pro better or worse than the bumped M4 Pro was? Apple doesn’t give hard performance specs, just Bezos charts. And, they say that the M5 Pro has half as many full power cores, and 20% less GPU.

And to add to the complexity, Apple deliberately made the core naming scheme confusing earlier this year…

I, too, will be replacing an Intel iMac in light of today’s announcements. I won’t be looking at M4 or earlier processors, though, because I want the new security architecture that launched with the M5 series. So I’m glad Apple didn’t wait for 2027 to ship the new Mini and Studio.

$2000 plus tax plus apple care plus monitor for an M5 Pro MacMini 1 TB drive ??? I don’t think so. I’m sticking with my M1 chip until there’s smoke coming out.

Not cheap, but I don’t think adding “plus monitor” is fair.

Yes, if you’re upgrading from a laptop or an iMac, you’ll need a new display, but Mac minis don’t have any proprietery video interfaces.

You can directly connect a display with an HDMI, USB-C or Thunderbolt interface.

Using an inexpensive adapter or cable, you can also connect anything that supports DVI, DisplayPort, mini DisplayPort or VGA.

FWIW, I’ve been using a 21-year-old monitor with my Mac Mini M4. I use a simple HDMI-DVI adapter dongle along with a stock DVI cable to connect its DVI input to the Mac’s HDMI output.

I have an M1Max Studio that I would like to upgrade or trade in, but the new one seems a bit expensive so I went to look at refurbished, but there are no Studios available. Will have to keep my eyes open. I always wonder how much of a difference I would see.

I went from an M1 Pro to an M4 Pro as my main driver 14" MBP just shy of two years ago. While my number crunching codes clearly run a lot faster (and benefitted from the vastly improved mem b/w), I can tell you that everyday GUI interaction did not really change in any noticeable manner. Apps didn’t launch faster, Spotlight didn’t show results faster, and the overall GUI didn’t appear snappier. Now I will say that the M1 Pro never felt laggy to me or slow in general interaction, but I think it’s worth pointing out that while I can clearly benchmark massive gains and even notice them in dedicated code I write and run for work (mostly CPU and mem limited [thus Pro instead of Max], not heavily multi-threaded by nature), it wasn’t the type of immediately noticeable upgrade in everyday interaction with regular consumer apps. Nothing like the step from Core i9 to M1 Pro back in the day. Apple silicon was a tremendous upgrade.

Now don’t get me wrong, the M6 and M5 Pro/Max are certainly yet more powerful than the M4 Pro, so gains vs. the M1 will for sure be more pronounced. But I would caution against upgrading solely because somebody expects the 3-5x types of improvement that benchmarks reveal for single-/multithreaded CPU benchmarks to show up in everyday GUI interaction. Also, just FTR, I by no means intend to insinuate that I’d regret the upgrade from M1 Pro to M4 Pro. The dedicated code I run at work (computational physics) runs massively faster, and even without that, I love that I now get to have a matte display and faster TB. So all good there.

Sure the new machines are very nice, but I think Apple is fudging how significant the price increase really is…

Last year I replaced my mid 2017 iMac 27 in, and I was deciding between a base model M4 Max Mac Studio and a fully loaded Mac mini, each with 2TB of storage.

In the end I went with the base model Mac Studio (M4 Max w/36GB RAM), as it has more ports and is higher performance than a top end Mac mini at that time.

That machine was $2,400 when I bought it, which is a lot of $. A base model Mac Studio M5 Max with a 2TB storage upgrade is now $3,300! :scream:

All I can say is I’m glad I got mine when I did, I wouldn’t be buying that model today.

Besides upgraded chip/architecture, Apple is doing the same tier system as before and repeating their confusion tactic in pricing as you click upgrade options. Look at the base M5 Max Studio for $2,500* (rounded) and then add the next upgrade tier for more 8 more GPU cores with the label “+$300”. Your resulting price will suddenly be $3,100* because the same fixed memory size restrictions are in place, requiring you have 48 GB memory (vs 36 in the first tier).

Brilliant work there on the sales side.

The real disappointment, however, is no models have customization options for CPU / GPU sets. There was a lot of engineering work done on the M5 to make separation and reunification of these two main components cheaper, allowing for something like a lower-tier CPU (fewer cores) and a higher-tier GPU (more cores) for someone who only needed the graphics performance. So, to get the highest number of GPU cores, you have to blow a lot of money on a top-end CPU that may not be useful for your tasks. Conversely, someone doing LLM and AI work may need the top-tier CPU with all its extra cores, but NOT need a GPU with 80 cores. Again, no customization besides pre-set models.

I need a modern, 27 inch 5K monitor with color calibration for a professional photography workflow.

My beef with Apple is that these so called Pro configurations aren’t really made for independent professionals in small shops. I guess Pro corporations and universities can afford them; I am also Pro but no longer can afford them. So when it gets to the point where my Photoshop and Lightroom are taking too long to perform the AI branded photo editing functions I need, not sure what my next step is going to be.

Something here feels different about this round of price increases and upgrades. The Pro moniker has been used to make unaffordable the products that I need .

$649. Granted, not as pretty as the old 27" iMac, but certainly also a good panel with the added benefit that it will work with any Mac you buy. In fact, it can accept multiple inputs and will likely outlast any computer that you buy alongside it. Unlike the old 27" iMac’s display.

Hmm, I’m pleasantly surprised on how my new purchase prices out:

April 2021 – Bought Mac mini M1, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD, for $1700.

Aug 2026 – Ordered Mac mini M6, 24 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD, for $1670 (incl. $430 trade-in value for the M1 mini).
And I had been strongly considering spending the additional $100 to upgrade the 1 Gb ethernet, but was able to forgo that as the M6 now has a 2.5 Gb ethernet port.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics calculator shows that $1700 in 2021 = $2125 today, so even without my trade-in, Apple is coming in under the overall inflation rate – despite the AI-induced explosion in RAM and SSD prices.

Finally, I know some will say “but you’re paying the Apple tax” for the large, 2 TB SSD you get. Maybe so, but this year’s SSD is supposedly almost twice as fast as the one in my M1, and the extra headroom keeps the total writes down for greatly improved reliability and longevity (see https://eclecticlight.co/2024/12/12/tune-for-performance-do-you-really-need-a-big-internal-ssd/ and https://eclecticlight.co/2025/03/05/should-you-pay-a-premium-price-for-a-bigger-internal-ssd/).

Thank you, that’s a really useful perspective.

No argument with your requirements, but note that if you already have one from your previous computer, you can use it with your new Mac. And if you don’t (migrating from an iMac?), you don’t have to buy the model Apple sells - there are others from other manufacturers that look just as good (maybe even using the same panel) and will cost less.

FWIW, Apple changed the GPU core design with the M5 family to add neural engine accelerators directly to the GPU, so number of cores may not be a good comparison. The straight M5 vs M4 GPU comparison was that the M5 was 31% faster, so 20% fewer cores may still have more performance.

And for the CPU, “super” cores are reportedly much faster than the “performance” cores. Basically the M5 Pro should be much faster for CPU because even the lower-tier cores (“performance”) are the same level of performance as the M4 Pro’s high-tier cores. Or, in other words, the M5 Pro has the same number of “performance” cores (10) but also has 5 much faster “super” cores rather than 4 much slower “efficiency” cores.
