With thanks to a responder here, I got Epson’s printer driver working on my Mac mini (Sonoma 14.6.1) for my Workforce 635 combo injet. The driver doesn’t work. I tried printing a USPS postage label - it printed the bar code and QR codes and nothing else. Tweaking it got it to print a bit more but still not satisfactory. I tried printing a simple Excel worksheet in which I had colored the grid lines. It printed the grid but not the text. Both these documents printed fine using my old iMac (latest Ventura, its limit) and Gutenprint. Gutenprint is sadly dead. The printer does not support AirPrint. Is there an open source or commercial printer driver? (I have VueScan for the scanner.)
Sadly, true. According to the home page, there is nobody on the Gimp-Print development team with the skills needed to maintain the Mac port of the software.
If someone here has the skills and wants to volunteer his time, please do. . Sadly, I have close to zero macOS development experience.
Sadly, I’m afraid I can’t help here. If the printer supported PostScript or PCL, then I’d suggest using a generic driver, but according to the product brochure, it only supports Epson’s proprietary ESC/P-R language.
But ESC/P has been used by Epson printers for a very very long time, so maybe there exists something resembling a generic driver that would work. But if not, I think your only recourse would be to contact Epson support and hope they are willing to do something.
The Epson page lists the following driver for a few Mac OS:
If you’re saying that doesn’t work under Sonoma but does work in Ventura, maybe you could try creating a virtual machine using Ventura and install the printer driver and software you’re trying to use. UTM works for Apple Silicon but you didn’t mention if your Mini is AS or Intel. VMware Fusion can run on Intel if needed with a free personal license.
Thanks, but that’s the Epson driver I downloaded and installed, the one that doesn’t work. I’m not using an Epson driver on my 2017 iMac running Ventura. I switched from the Epson driver to Gutenprint years ago because the Epson driver was so bad, long before Ventura. I’ll contact support, as @Shamino suggested, but I don’t have much hope.
Sorry to hear that the Epson doesn’t work. If you don’t get anywhere with their support contact, you could try going the virtual machine route as I mentioned earlier since you can run the same setup you have on your older iMac on the Mini using UTM or VMware Fusion which are both free apps.
It’s not as convenient as having a driver installed directly on your mini, but have you tried sharing the printer from your iMac as an AirPrint printer?
Hi
We have been lucky getting the drivers from the Epson UK site,
https://www.epson.co.uk/en_GB/support
I don’t know why they are different but they have newer drivers for the old printers with new OS,
@jk2gs Thanks, I may consider something like that.
@josehill I’m getting rid of my iMac with its dead fusion drive (big mistake buying that) and myriad other problems (restarts itself repeatedly, even when idle overnight), so that’s not a long-term solution.
@appleget Good suggestion, but that page recognizes neither my model number or serial number.
