There is another thing that might be part of the reason for the better quality. The focus point can be adjusted by the iPhone software to be at its sharpest at the zoomed range. I would like to see a photo of a totally flat object, like a painting or a wall. This will keep the focus at the same range and we can see if the effect is as impressive then.
