iPadOS 26 Menu Bar and Keyboard Shortcuts

A small but welcome enhancement to iPadOS: adding a Mac-like Menu Bar.

Why? Even though it doesn’t look like many developers (maybe not even any developers) are taking advantage of it yet, it comes with default menu items. That’s like MacOS menus have been forever. Even when developers believe they have no need for building menu selections into their applications, there is still a core interface “[app]…File…Edit…Window…Help” menu set with basic commands that rides along with the app thanks to MacOS itself.

I dropped down the menu bar this morning by happenstance while I was working with Paprika 3. Most of the items were non-functional, but under the App menu was…Settings, along with the familiar ⌘, keyboard shortcut for Settings.

There may have always been a way to get to the settings in iOS or iPadOS directly from an app, but I wasn’t aware of it. Since I almost always use iPad with a keyboard, this takes me directly to Settings. I would never have known until the Menu Bar was added.

It may be a “meh” revelation to some, but to me it’s a useful addition to the system.

It’s worth reading Glenn Fleishman’s “Take Control of iOS 26 and iPadOS 26” to learn about this and other changes in the most recent OS.

I agree. So many (excellent) “Take Control” books, so little time…
