IOS 18.1 "Security Settings Verification Required"

Yesterday my iPhone settings started asking for verification of my security settings. It begins with this: “To make sure you don’t lose access to your photos, notes, files, documents, messages…and other data stored in iCloud, verify your Apple Account security settings,” followed by a request for the iPhone passcode.

Maybe I’m just paranoid, but this seems odd. I’ve never seen this before even after years of IOS system updates, and I haven’t seen anything in Mac news. With all the very clever security ploys these days, I wonder if this is one of them. Is it genuine?

Perhaps unrelated, but I also got odd vibes when just yesterday I needed to agree to new T&C for iCloud and after agreeing to those I had to supply my iPhone passcode to complete the process. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Without clicking on the alert, can you go into your iCloud settings and see what happens when you are there? does it ask you when you ago to System Settings / Apple Account on your device?

As a first step, you can do a web-based login and check your settings and profile via a web browser:

Next, if I remember correctly, you can live chat with Apple via the iOS Apple Support app. An Apple rep should be able to tell you if the verification request is legitimate.

In the iCloud settings, everything appears to be normal, i.e, no requests to open settings or my Apple account. btw, I already did click on the alert but haven’t entered anything.

Apple Support assures me that since the warning appeared in Settings and not Safari or other app, it’s genuine. So I plunged ahead and entered my security key. Thanks everyone. I’ll post again if anything blows up.

I have been getting a similar message on a Mac Mini for several months now but when I try to access System Settings the process just hangs. So far there have been no consequences for doing nothing.

I’ve ignored it, and it hasn’t appeared again.

Theoretically iOS 18 is compatible with iPhone SE 2 and 3 … I am still hesitant however.
By the way, Apple States in their What’s new in iOS 18 Statement: Privacy and Security. Redesigned Privacy and Security settings help you
I guess that covers it all then, no doubt
