iCloud ‘phantom’ user - solved by Apple

I have the 2Tb storage plan. At the top level in iCloud/Storage it states I’ve used 1.8 of 2Tb.
If I go to the iCloud+ Features area it states I’ve used 1.6Tb of the 2Tb plan.
It then tells me I’m sharing my storage with 4 members of my family in my Family usage. One of those users is taking up 94gb of space. However I no longer want that person to use my plan but can find no way to remove them.
In my ‘Family’ there are just the three people plus myself with whom I’m sharing and that I want to continue sharing.
The question is then - how can I recover that 94Gb and remove that person completely?

Remove that person from your group.

As the family organizer, go to Settings > Family on your iPhone or iPad (or System Settings > Family on Mac).

  • Tap the name of the family member you want to remove.
  • Select Remove [member’s name] from Family and confirm the removal

That is the problem. That person is not there, only the people I want to share with. The person who takes up 94Gb appears in a different list in ‘iCloud+ features’ under ‘Family’ and is

greyed out - see photo

Dave, FYI if you use [R]eply to reply to specific people (as opposed to just commenting) they’ll get a system notice, otherwise they won’t. I just happened to revisit this thread and saw your reply.

Thanks for giving additional needed details, like the person still being in your Family list.

Is the person a child? You can’t directly delete a Child Account but must migrate it to another family group or wait until the child is 13.

Try this: Go to Settings > Screen Time on your device. If Screen Time is enabled, turn it off temporarily, then return to Settings > Family and see if the option to remove the member is now available.

If the account is stuck or greyed out for another reason, try signing out and back in, or restart your device.

Finally, if this person is amenable, have them subscribe to a separate iCloud storage plan on their own devide. This will automatically remove them from using your shared storage, and their usage will no longer count against your quota

If the issue persists and the person won’t subscribe to their own plan, you may need to contact Apple Support for assistance.

Thank you - unfortunately none of your suggestions worked so I’ll try the last one and contact Apple. Appreciate the help.

If I understand your comment correctly, the requirement is to use the Reply button immediately under the message (which has a gray background when the cursor hovers over it) and not the Reply button at the end of the thread (which has a blue background all the time), and you make a good point. (I do not use Dark Mode, and backgrounds are almost certainly different for people who do.) If you meant something else, please elaborate.

Problem solved after contacting Apple Support. The answer. ‘Stop sharing with Family’ then reinstate the ones you want to share with straight away.
