How to abbreviate "Apple Intelligence"?

As Adam points out in another thread, the natural abbreviation for Apple Intelligence (“AI”) collides rather forcibly with the already ubiquitous use of AI for Artificial Intelligence. But that makes me wonder: What could we use as an abbreviation, or does clarity require no abbreviation at all? ApI? (wait, that one’s taken too). AppInt? Something else?

In many countries the abbreviation for the United States is EEUU, even though it “should” be EU in their languages (Estados Unidos, États-Unis, Estats Units, etc.) to avoid confusion with the European Union.

So one possibility for Apple Intelligence is AAII.

ML for Machine Learning.

But seriously…

  • It’s obvious to everyone that it is no accident that it is Apple Intelligence (AI).
  • The Apple Style Guide hasn’t been updated yet, but you know it is going to say to never abbreviate it.
  • This Engadget article tells of Apple’s employees strained answers to this question.
  • How about AppIntel? :-)

I suppose we could tick off all the people reading articles from Windows, Linux and Android systems by abbreviating it to I (type the Apple glyph on a Mac with Option-Shift-K).

AppleIntel? Maybe we can retcon the term to refer to all the x86_64 architecture Macs?

Personally, I think the term is going to fade in the background as people refer to the specific I features (e.g. Genmoji, Summarize, etc.) when they need to discuss it. Because ultimately, ML is a mechanism used to implement product and application features, not a feature unto itself.

Yep. Unreadable from Windows:

A moron?

I call Strava’s AI “artificial banality”, because it’s always telling me something that’s obvious. In general I call AI “artificial stupidity” because that’s usually a better word than “intellegence” for what it outputs. Given my brief experience with Apple’s version, I don’t think it’s any better.

Gotta go check on my individual holdings of AAPL now…

I’m glad no one suggested API – as a developer, I feel that one has been taken. :technologist:

Perhaps all lowercase? Keep AI for how it is widely used and use ai for this corner of it.

No abbreviation. It’s just not necessary.

I agree—the umbrella term Continuity is largely unknown, but we talk about the features.

My job is programming on a large-ish product that is divided up into subsystems, with 2 letter abbreviations. I started on the Agents’ Interest team, and that’s where I have the most knowledge.

Which means, I can put on my resumé that I have 36 years of experience in AI.

My 2¢ is that we use an abbreviation, not an acronym. “AI” has many heritages depending on context and domain. So, in our domain and context, it gets confused with “artificial intelligence” as a shorthand for several things, from the application of large language models to neuromorphic machines. So, if you’re working LLMs, you have a different context from those working neuromorphic machines. You know who you are, and I am not worried about your understanding.

Alas, when talking about a product, we should stick with the proper product name, in this case, “Apple Intelligence.” The acronym AI will be confusing with those other things and not uniquely reference Apple Intelligence. So, if we’re all up for an abbreviation to shorten our reference, I’d consider “Apple Intel” (Oops! On an M-series Mac?) Then maybe “Apple Intell.” That’s worked in the intelligence community for decades.

(And thanks for the brain break!)

Great reference to the Engadget article! Devindra Hardawar concluded his piece with the following: “…At this point, I’ve just decided to call Apple Intelligence ‘Apple AI.’ It’s shorter and it differentiates the product from competitors. And yes, it just means ‘Apple Apple Intelligence,’ but everyone still says ‘ATM machine’ and ‘PIN number.’…”I tend to agree. I may also make a TextExpander with “Apple AI” as the abbreviation and have it expand to “Apple Intelligence.”

Hmm.

If my recent exploration of these features is any indication, I would have to suggest AK. Apple Kindergarten.

I do admit that the improved phrase (as opposed to word) completion is useful, particularly in Messages when you’re bumbling about outside the house. The subject selection in Photos is impressive even though it won’t pass professional muster but when you’re firing off a quick photo of the dinosaur to your granddaughter who cares?

But the rewrite suggestions? Yeeeshh!

The obvious answer is :green_apple::brain:.

Siri.

Apple intelligence is what they have been trying to do with Siri all along. It just wasn’t OpenAI based.

It won’t win the excitement of people who have been disappointed by Siri for years, but nonetheless. Maps sucked for years; then they made it great. They never changed the name.

Siri.

I like SSS: “Siri’s Still Stupid.” Try “Siri, what was yesterday’s high temperature?,” e.g.

It’s gimmickry, IMO.

If Apple had chosen a different name than “Siri” (e.g. “AppleScript for Voice” or “VoiceScript”, nobody would have these kinds of expectations. But because they gave it a human-like name and programmed in responses meant to sound like what a human would say, people assume (very incorrectly) that there is some kind of intelligence behind the curtain.
