Home router security

I mentioned end-of-support issues in another thread, and it reminded me of an earlier comment here on this thread:

It turned out that my RAX15 router received its last firmware update two months after my post.

As I mentioned, the third-party OpenWRT firmware does not support that model (nor most RAX models).

It’s a pity. Even if not used as a wireless router, the RAX15’s hardware is more than adequate for many other uses. For example, if it were supported by OpenWRT, it would work well as a Time Capsule replacement for Time Machine backups with the latest versions of macOS. In 2026, pretty much the only safe use for a RAX15 is to disable its wireless functions and use it as an Ethernet switch or wired-only router.

Bottom line: if you’re moderately technical and are interested in maximizing the lifespan of a router, check to see if it is supported by alternative firmware package before purchasing one.
