Has syncing ripped tracks in Music gotten harder?

I just found this thread and totally agree that album art in Music in a mess, but for me that’s the least of it. I’d like to go off on a bit of a tangent here about syncing from the Music app in general. I’ve been using Macs for many, many years and, unless my memory is totally screwed up, it seems that it used to be much easier than it is now to sync tracks I ripped from my CDs. Am I correct in that memory or not? I like to use my iPhone as a portable music box and I’ve tried various approaches to syncing, including the use of third party apps like AnyTrans, and eventually the tracks seem to get there, but there seem to be too many hoops to jump through. Perhaps I’m just being dense, but I get really frustrated with something that I remember as being pretty much automatic years ago. Is there any good reason why tracks in the Music app cannot be allowed to sync automatically to other devices in my account, just as photos in the Photos app do?
Great thanks for any insights and help you can give me!

I deal with this problem by only using Playlists, which seems pretty flawless, and I get the same results on all my devices. I don’t put everything on my phone, which I also use as my main player when I’m out of the house, because I have way too much music and lots of podcasts, and I need to not be overwhelmed simply approaching the list.
