Google Workspace pooled storage for legacy G Suite users

This is nice. It will resolve all the complaints I had after Google made their G Suite changes, which basically blocked us from adding more space, e.g. for photos. I have been using an extra Gmail account just for that since then when all I wanted to do was buy more storage space and I couldn’t!

From email received today:

Over the past few years, we’ve rolled out pooled storage to customers across Google Workspace. Pooled storage provides a simpler and more flexible way to manage storage, as all storage is shared across users within a plan. This removes the need to manage it on a per-user basis.

In the coming months, we’ll start rolling out this pooled storage model to your G Suite legacy free edition plan, providing you with more flexibility to manage your storage.

What this means for your organization

Starting May 1, 2025, we will begin updating your services to include pooled storage with your G Suite legacy free edition plan. This change comes at no cost to you.

Under the pooled storage model:

  • Storage will be pooled and shared across all users within your organization.
  • You can see storage usage and total storage pool on Google Admin Console under Storage.
  • The total amount of storage you are given will not be reduced. If your organization needs additional storage after moving to pooled storage, you will soon be able to purchase additional storage at a discount. Storage will be available for purchase in 100GB or 1TB increments in your admin console.
