I have historically used a Canon SLR and more recently a DSLR (Canon R5 with a Canon RF 100-500mm lens) when taking wildlife photos. We are going on a 3 month round the world trip which starts with a Rwanda gorilla and monkey trek, and I have decided not to take my Canon (don’t want to carry heavy kit for 3 months). I have an iPhone 16 Pro Max and been using (practicing) on a holiday in India and find the movement on screen challenging when zooming. Would a gimbal help when taking photos (in zoom). The Insta360 Flow Pro was one that seems to be highly rated.
I’ve experimented with gimbals. It adds another gadget to be charged, and another Bluetooth pairing to deal with. The important points are: be sure that the device mount is large enough to accommodate a Pro Max, and make sure you like the app that comes with the gimbal, because the gadget won’t work without it.
I liked being able to point and tap on a face or other point of interest on the iPhone screen and then have the gimbal track it smoothly.
Enjoy your trip!
I’m using the Insta360 Flow with my iPhone SE (3).
Previously I had a Zyun Smooth.
I link the Flow (the pro is a little bit improved (and came out about a week after I bought my Flow)).
It has lots of features - but the constant problem of remembering what they all are and how to get to them taxes my brain somewhat.
I haven’t used it much for stills but find that sometimes the shutter-button on the Flow doesn’t always register a press.
I looking at getting a 16 Pro in the new year and it will be interesting to see what the zoom ring on the flow does when there’s a choice of lenses.
