FunBITS – just for a quick smile

Hello everyone. Just for fun (this is not a nutritional post)… If you have a moment, these might bring a smile. Last year I stumbled across a “pop-up” shop on the ground floor of the Parco department store here in Kichijoji. It was chockfull of Americana, much of which was very nostalgic for me (especially stuff from the 70s and early 80s). The fellow running it appeared to be in his 50s, and was very knowledgable about everything he was selling. We had a lot of fun!

Several items caught my 1980s early Mac adopter eye:

This Mac. I loved the pricing. I asked him if he knew why it was a marvelous price for this product. He could tell by my smile that it must have meant something, but he didn’t know why. We had a nice chuckle together when I told him.

This camera. Remember this? (Should I have bought it?)

• And finally, this… which I did buy!

I’ve not set it up yet… one day soon… I’m amazed and grateful that there is still a community out there supporting it. If any of you have and use one, I’d love some tips on getting it going and how you use it. I may bring it to the studio just for the conversational value.

One last photo to give you a bit more of the vibe of this guy’s wares…

He also has mountains of other non-tech stuff. I’m thinking of contacting him to see where else he might pop up! I f there is something for your U.S.-based past that you just can’t find, please let me know and I can ask him for you.

I have a QuickTake 150 in its original box if you want it…

@jeff2
What is the “Chumby”? I have never seen this and I was there fir the 70’s and 80’s.

I hadn’t heard about it until now either, but here’s a summary:

Fun post! Thank you. I’ve got three Chumby devices sitting in a box. Also planning on someday resurrecting them.

I vaguely recall the Chumby as an information appliance that could be controlled by “thumping” it. Thanks to @Shamino 's informative link I see I was only half-right about that…

You definitely don’t want to engage in Chumby-whompa-thumping. At least not until you’ve had a few drinks - maybe a whiskey drink, then a vodka drink…
Then a lager drink, and a cider drink…
