What are you trying to achieve beyond basic SMB file sharing in one direction or the other?

I wish to transfer files from an external HDD to a server.

If you’re on the same network as the server and it’s using SMB, you should be able to connect to it in the Finder by choosing Go > Connect to Server.

If it’s out on the Internet and accessible via SFTP, you’d need an app like Cyberduck or Fetch or Transmit.
