This came out of the blue: a vertical bar on the right side of the screen with colors almost like a rainbow. It is a M1 2020 MacBook Air with the latest Sequoia update.
Is it here to stay or can it be fixed?.
Problems like this usually mean one or more pins on the LCD screenâs data cable is not making good contact. It might be repairable, if you have access to a repair shop that can do board-level work.
Otherwise, Apple will suggest replacing the display assembly (if thatâs still possible) or swapping the entire computer. Either way, it will be expensive if not covered by Apple Care.
Replacing the display assembly wouldnât be a problem if one could find one. Looks like there are none available. Would cost at least 300$.
Iâll start looking for a board-level expert though Iâm not too optimistic it will be worth my bucks.
Assuming that the problem is in the screen and not on the motherboard (Iâm not sure how you can diagnose that without a spare screen to test it with), it looks like a $400 part and about 30 minutes work.
See these two links from iFixit (the procedure and the part):
I wouldnât mind the work if I could find a spare display from a trustworthy source here in Germany.
