I’m not advocating switching to OneDrive, but they do let you store your files on an external drive. They have come up with an architecture that works with Apple’s new requirements but will store the full version of local files on an external drive.
I also use Maestral instead of the official Dropbox client, but I’m a very light Dropbox user.
