Don't Panic (Unison replacement)

I have the Unison newsreader from Panic. The problem is that Panic discontinued it in 2014 (changing it to be free, as-is) and over the years its has accumulated problems, such as:

  • Frequent crashes
  • Doesn’t register mouse clicks at where the mouse is. This is a severe problem!
  • Doesn’t support https, but this can be worked around with stunnel.

Anyone have suggestions for replacement? I’m looking for one with inline-images, support of modern Usenet binaries (e.g. yenc), multi-threaded operation, filtering.

NZB support is not a requirement, nor is PAR2 and split-file assembly – I have separate applications that can do that – but makes it more convenient. I never upload.

My initial search only found one candidate: Usenapp.

Usenapp is what I switched to when Unison became too frustrating to use. It seems to work pretty well.

I’m really disappointed with how Panic abandoned their collection of useful software in favor of focusing on entertainment. I’ll grant that Usenet is a pretty niche market at this point (and a prime venue for both piracy and cp trading), but I still use CandyBar to manage custom icons. I understand their reasons, but am still disappointed by the loss of what was a reliable source of good utilities.

(sorry - couldn’t resist the Hitchhikers Guide link)

This is very well said above…
I’ve been using Transmit since the late 1990s & I have used a lot of their MacOS software over the years.

It’s only a guess that Panic has more opportunities in the entertainment platforms than the Apple App arena, which is sad.
