Creating a Big Sur bootable drive when I'm on Sonoma

My friend’s Imac is booting into recovery mode. She doesn’t have a backup and when we try reinstalling her OS (Big Sur) we get an error that her drive is too full.

So… I’m thinking I can create a Big Sur bootable USB, boot her machine and delete enough files to do the OS reinstall… right?

However, when I try to download Big Sur onto my machine (running Sonoma) I’m told it’s not compatible. Actually, I think it is, but I’m guessing it’s because of Sonoma and Apple won’t let me downgrade.

Is there a way around this? I don’t want to change my system, I want to create a bootable drive for a different machine.
