ChatGPT - replace Siri?

I have been using ChatGPT for almost all my searches, and the dictation, translations, and auto-correct features are a blessing after years of frustration with Siri!

The other day, I asked ChatGPT if I could replace Siri with it, and I received a reply saying, “Not yet.” I would be eternally grateful if Apple decided to replace Siri with ChatGPT.

I have since created a shortcut, thanks to ChatGPT, to help me interface with my iPhone more effectively.

Some of my frustrations with Siri include not being able to relay messages accurately. For example, when I say, “Tell X my ETA is 5 minutes,” Siri responds with, “Etta is 5 minutes.”

Or when I ask, “Siri, what would you like to say to Lyndall?” and it replies, “Tell Lyndall X,” but then mispronounces or misspells the name as “Linda X.”

It’s so frustrating that it makes me want to swear as I write this!

The big difference between ChatGPT and Siri right now is that ChatGPT is a large language model, whereas Siri is a token-based system. As a result, ChatGPT is vastly better at understanding and responding, whereas Siri can do things on the local device. Apple’s promise of an LLM-based version of Siri with Apple Intelligence was the big thing that the company had to admit it couldn’t deliver during the iOS 18/macOS 15 cycle and thus has stopped promising for a specific date.
