Centon 32 GB USB stick not recognized by MBPro M4

I guess I thought USB sticks were sort of always a universal piece of tech.

MBPro prior to M4 have no issue seeing my Centon stick via Apple USB/HDMI.

The security feature asks to allow the accessory but the drive is not even recognized in system report, or Disk Utility

Any clues?

Might be a USB port power issue. There is another discussion about the need for powered USB hubs for some DVD players. It seems that the latest Macs have lower capability.

hmm, to digress I double checked my Apple Super Drives via the adapter

Power wise still connects, but I have to say the performance of these drives seems to be less robust than they used to be.

I doubt any computer of any kind would have a problem with a USB flash drive. They just don’t draw that much power and even the lowest-powered USB port should be able to provide at least 100 mA (500 mW), which should be plenty for a simple flash drive.

But that having been said, I’ve seen plenty of el-cheapo drives that simply don’t work reliably. In my experience, every product made by PNY is flaky trash like this. I know nothing about Centon, but perhaps they are also junk.

For whatever it’s worth, the USB flash drives I use (mostly brand names like SanDisk, Kingston and Micro Center’s store brand) have always worked reliably for me.

Noted. Never heard much of Centon but I could add this was a stick acquired by OWC Mac Sales so it surprises me a bit, the lack compatibility

The drive does function fine on older Macs, and via the adapter on older Macs with USB-C only.

Oh well.

I ran across similar on an iPadOS 26.2 device recently. Got the ‘allow accessory’ dialog, tapped yeah ok, and… drive did not appear in Files App.

I used another to get the job done so didn’t troubleshoot further. I have a variety of flash drives from mostly ‘name brands’, and the one in question works on the Mac.

Maybe that helps the troubleshooting.

The folks at OWC are really good about backing their products. I would give them a call.
