Catalina Shutdown Takes Forever

I have Catalina 15.1 running on an external SSD off of my 2017 iMac. It starts up fine, but when I try to reboot or shut down, it takes an incredibly long time, 5 minutes or so, with no apps running at all. All the icons and menus quit right away, leaving the default desktop picture on until it finally shuts down.

Has anyone else seen this or have suggestions for a fix?

This problem has fixed itself. It may have occurred because I changed the name of the one of the Catalina volumes without changing the other, but not totally sure.
