For some reason I was typing in my Apple ID password a lot and, as y’all know, it isn’t saved anywhere - you have to type it every time.
I thought I would be a smarty-pants and created a text replacement shortcut. But I assigned a really dumb key stroke and now it pops up often as I type. I’m too embarrassed to say what I made the shortcut…
But I cannot find where it has been saved. Any suggestions friends?
Hope it wasn’t CmD-P!
Text replacements (unless you use a third party app like Alfred) are in System Settings>Keyboard>Text Replacements… Click on the shortcut for your password and once it shows a mini-text editor you can change it.
I added it to the Passwords app by signing in to appleid.apple.com in Safari. Once it is in Passwords.app, you can open the app and copy/paste as needed. Not as convenient as a shortcut, perhaps, but probably a bit more secure.
Well, consider using Text Replacements like drmoss_ca wrote, to either edit the Replacement or delete it and make a new one.
Or look at Text Expander or the Snippets feature of LaunchBar or a password management app.
Or if your Desktop is always visible, highlight the ID in text somewhere and drag it to the Desktop to create a Clipping. Then drag the Clipping from Desktop into where you need the text.
There might be a way to do it with Shortcuts app but I just tried it and apologize to say the app is a bit over my graying head!
If you didn’t do it via System Settings, then I think it must be through a third party utility. Could be worth examining your Applications folder for candidates.
This article has tips but one of the comments is:
“An old text replacement still happens to me, even though I’ve removed it from the text replacement menu. Do you know where the actual file of text replacements is located in the system? I think I need to delete it and start anew to get it to forget the old replacement. All my attempts to use the system preferences to get it to disappear (creating a new text repalcement using the same trigger, deleting it, etc.). Even Apple support has told me I need to do a re-install, which seems like overkill for such a small issue”
I got a MacBook Pro just after I posted this and forgot about it, but have gone back to using the Mac mini at home and I’m back to the problem. I followed your advice today Michael, but still cannot find it. I guess I’ll reinstall the system. I suppose it’s not saved to iCloud because when I set-up the MacBook the annoying replacement didn’t follow me…
DrMoss! I wish I had read, and digested, your message better. I had set it up in Alfred! Who would have thunk it? What was I doing? It did allow me to do a text replacement in a Password field that I think might be impossible with regular System txt replacement.
Glad you sorted it out. Alfred’s “snippets” will auto-insert in fields that he System text replacements do not work in (notably on a lot of web pages). It ended up being all I used Alfred for, but in the end I decided it was probably taking up too many resources to have it running all the time and I gave Alfred the sack.
Thanks DrMoss, I must have read somewhere that Alfred can indeed work in password fields. I was setting up a new machine and having to type in my Apple password a lot!
I only use Alfred for opening apps and searching the web, but other utilities tempt, especially Internet searches with AI assistance…
