Bricked iPad on update to iPadOS 18.2?

I told iMazing to update my iPad Air 4th generation to iPadOS 18.2. After several minutes, iMazing said the installation failed because I needed to enter my passcode (which I had done at the start). The iPad now shows an apple and a progress bar that has apparently not started moving and iMazing cannot see the iPad. (iMazing says to connect a device; the iPad is connected.)

Advice, please.

“Your Mac is updating the software on this iPad.” Maybe I figured it out; at least one report yet to come.

I think you’ll need to put the iPad in recovery mode and reset it completely.

Much as I appreciate what iMazing is trying to do, I really don’t recommend anything that gets in the middle of actions that only Apple should perform, like installing iOS updates.

That’s the conclusion I had reached. I intended to ask if it was an overreaction to avoid using iMazing for OS updates; I’ll take your response as a “Not at all.”

The Finder just told me the iPad is restarting. I’m hopeful.

Yay, I unlocked the iPad and it looks normal.

I followed the instructions at If your iPad won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support, which didn’t quite seem to apply, because I never got to step 2. (The iPad did not appear in the Finder.) Nonetheless, in panic and because I wanted to do something, I continued to step 3 (press and release volume button closer to top button; press and release volume button further from top button; press and hold top button). I needed to hold the top button for what seemed like 25 seconds (in other words, eternity) before anything happened, but then the iPad apparently went to step 3d (recovery-mode screen) and the Mac did see the iPad. I said to update to 18.2, and it apparently worked.

What might have happened if I had chosen Restore? Would I have chosen a backup? Would it revert to the previous version of the OS?

I’m not sure—I don’t know if I’ve ever had to do this, and certainly not recently.
