In Apples mail it is possible to block senders, i.e. alpha@bravo.se. Is it possible to block mail from a certain domain, i.e. bravo.se in this case. Most of my spam mail come from a few domains but the part before the @-character is different every time and thus blocking does not help.
Grateful for any suggestions.
I looked at blocking in Mail and when trying to add an address to the list of Blocked senders, a ‘picker window’ came up for me to pick from Contacts application. I tried entering an address or domain and it was not possible.
Tips application says you can also add by clicking on sender address and choose ‘block sender’ or similar.
It’s not clear from Tips application what happens with blocked senders, if they go to trash, never reach inbox etc.
I generally use @aforkosh tip of setting rules for the domain name and having them go straight to Trash.
As you mentioned though lots of spammers change the before @ part. I have some spammers in my rules who manage to evade the Rules even if I set the full email, domain only, @and domain, ‘from’ name etc. Today I looked at full headers of on particularly annoying spammer and found yet another address listed so added that to the rule also.
So back to your question I don’t see a way to block a sender’s domain, only to set a rule to handle it one way or another.
(Mac 15.2; Mail 16.0)
Rule setting and Blocking are two different mechanisms. On an iPad or iPhone, blocking is easiest. On a Mac, it’s arguably easier to set a rule.
You can see the effects of both on a Mac in Mail’s settings.
Look in in Rules to see the rules; look in Junk Mail to see the Blocked list. Here I’m showing what’s blocked in Mail > Settings > Junk Mail with Blocked selected:
As explained there, you can choose what happens to blocked Mail.
Here you can also see that the Blocked list includes not only specific (recipient@domain) email addresses but phone numbers as well.
On iOS or iPadOS devices, at least, this same Blocked list is used by the Phone, and Messages apps as well as Mail.
To aforkosh, TDTdn, and bob32. Thank you for responding.
Does it make any difference that my mailaccount is POP? I stayed with POP since I wanted to see all mails on all three devices, Mac, iPad, and iPhone. The blocked senders are synchronized on the three devices.
I created a rule accordig to aforkosh on good Friday for two of the most common domains marked as blocked but is seems that spam senders take Easter off, the last spam arrived on the 17th. I will use blocking on iPhone and iPad as bob32 described.
I will likely se what effects blocking and rules have had after Easter.
Thank you all again.
@gilken , can’t answer your question about POP but wanted to ask if the Rules and Block actions you’ve set up automatically occur?
I’ve set Blocking to move mail from blocked addresses to Trash and also have some Rules set up to put mail from specified domains in the Trash but it’s hit or miss if that occurs. Some does automatically go to Trash and some stays in Junk Mail until I ‘Apply Rules’. I’ll keep trying to figure it out but hope you are not seeing the same and getting discouraged.
@TBTdn, just blocking contacts makes no difference neither in iPhone, iPad, or in the Mac. I have only had 2 domains i the rules on the Mac and no mail has arrived from them after Easter. I have now extended the rules list with the ten latest domains. Applying rules on already received mails moves them according to the rules, will see if that will happen automatically on receiving mails.
I find it all a bit inconsistent and confusing and not at all satisfactory on iPad and iPhone.
