Apple Launches Self Service Repair Program

Apple is now supplying parts and tools to repair recent iPhones, with Macs to be added later. But it’s very oddly presented and has some asking if it goes far enough.

Here’s a video about using Apple’s repair kit. The kit weighs 97 pounds!

I’m not surprised, given that the kit includes an entire lab full of specialized tools and jigs to allow a person without special training to safely remove and replace a screen.

Although I love iFixit’s work, it would be unreasonable for Apple to be leasing a microwavable hot pad and guitar picks instead of the tools they actually use for their own repairs.

And the Self Service Repair program is now available in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.
