Anyone recovered data from a dead hard drive?

Friends have a dead external hard drive. They took the mechanism out of it (a Seagate 8TB Barracuda) and put it into an enclosure which was lit up, but it didn’t work.

Has anyone managed to recover data from a dead hard drive without sending it to Drivesavers?

Yes many times with DiskWarrior but only with Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus) filesystem. If it makes a spinning noise it is worth a try.

Did it once with a Maxtor EIDE drive. The disc was spinning but there was no chatter from the servo and it wouldn’t mount.
I happened to have an identical drive that worked fine.
I removed the circuit board from bottom of the good drive and fitted it to the dud. (Always the optimist!)
Stuck it in an enclosure and bingo. it mounted so I was able to lift all the data to another drive.

This probably would not work if the drives were from different makers.
