Another Photos import question with RAW files

For the last while, when I insert my camera card, Photos puts up a little flag on each new image saying JPEG+RAW.
In the past I was able to select only the jpegs for import. I offload my RAW files in the Finder to a separate external with its own filing system.
Is there a way to carry on this way or have Apple forced something on to me that I don’t want?
So far I have been unable to find a preference.
Now. I notice that since updating to 15.0.1 there is a new entry under Media Types in the sidebar labelled RAW. There are 12,000+ images in it and they all have the JPEG+RAW flag.
I think that as I get older Apple is determined to accelerate me into dementia.

I think there is no preference setting for this. You can choose to cancel the automatic import option presented after your insert your SD card and instead select Import from the File Menu. Then navigate to your SD card, view as list and sort by type. You can just select the JPEGs at that point.

You’re probably aware that you can right-click on a JPEG+RAW pair in the Photos app and choose Use RAW as Original and then when you edit the image you will edit the raw file, something you can confirm using the metadata window where the file name is listed.

You can also configure macOS to not auto-launch Photos when an SD card is inserted. The last time I checked you could do that from the Image Capture utility’s settings. You may have to insert your card while Image Capture is running in order to configure this.

You should also be able to configure Photos to not auto-import when a camera/card is connected. You would then always have to either Import from the File menu or (as I prefer), select the device from the left-side bar and use the corresponding screen’s controls to drive the import.

Yes - I support using Image Capture (I hope it is still part of macOS Sequoia!) for selecting and importing SD images to Photos (or a Mac Folder). For ready access, I have kept Image Capture in the Dock for successive Macs and OSX/macOS. It is also useful for scanning documents with my HP Officejet.

Image Capture can also be used to manage (e.g. delete) photos and videos on an SD card.

An addition to my earlier post.
A plus thing I have notice in Photos is that it now recognises things.
I recently returned from a trip to Lisbon and dragondrofped the jpegs from the card directly try into photos. it worked just as I expected it to.
On opening some of the images I noticed there was a little widget (sometimes more than one) superimposed on the part of the picture.

Clicking the widget it gives a popup naming the item. The right widget names the type palm tree. the left widget in this image comes up blank but on others it names the building or structure. I assume with time and more learning it will identify the blank one.

Now my new import problem.
My daughter is currently sunning herself in the Indian Ocean and each day she messages me with a bunch of pictures of the grandkids.
Last night 10 new pix arrived but the download button would not work.
Normally (like about 5 hours earlier) the button would whirl then disappear and the pix would arrive in Photos. Not this time.
The button flashed and the reappeared. Multiple times.
Opening the pix within Messages worked ok and I can drag the pix onto the desktop and open them, but dragging them from the desktop into photos does not work.
Photos puts up this message

As I said, 5 hours earlier this worked as normal.
The message is a bit vague. Where is it looking for the space for the import?
The photos library is on its own 2TB external with over half aTB of free space.
At 24,000 images have I reached Photos limit?
(Could it be that those RAW files that I didn’t know it had imported have anything to do with it ? If so, what’s the easiest way to remove them from photos - again I have them all stored on their own external HD.)

I’d be grateful for thoughts etc.
cheers
