All Solid-State Batteries (ASSBs)

I just wrote this for my personal blog:

New York Post: New electric vehicle battery charge can last whopping 600 miles

TL;DR: A relatively new tech, All Solid-State Batteries (ASSB) is a variation on Lithium-Ion that uses a solid electrolyte instead of the usual liquid. This promises much higher energy densities and much less chance of catastrophic failures (which often result in fires).

The article is talking about their use in new high-end luxury EVs (promising a 600 mile range, vs. the 300 mile range of today’s high-end EVs), but if it works as expected, we will likely see this tech make its way into less expensive EVs and other electronic devices (like laptops and phones). It also promises the ability charge more quickly.

I have no idea how long it will take for this tech to end up in small consumer electronics, but I think that when it does, it will be a game changer.

I agree this is potentially very exciting. I read a lot about new battery technologies, but most are a long way from entering useful levels of production.

Solid state batteries would be an exciting upgrade in many ways, and seem much closer to possible real-world use at scale. I recently purchased on as a small solid-state travel backup battery.

I am very hopeful this technology makes it in to wide-spread use at both small (say portable devices) and large (vehicles and whole home backup batteries). Here’s hoping!
