AirTag chirps?

Why did my indoor AirTag chirp when I got really close to it after coming home from being out all day?

I didn’t want to take it with me out too since I didn’t need it. I never had that happened before. I checked my iPhone 12 mini’s Find My app and didn’t see anything unusual.

My guess: your phone came back into Bluetooth range of the AirTag.

If that is true, shouldn’t it chirp every time I am in close range to it?

My AirPods seem to chirp every time they get out of range of my Desktop Bluetooth (even when I am actually using them with my iPhone elsewhere in the house?) Have done it since day one, and it’s irritating…

Unexpected chirping could mean a low battery. When was the last time you changed the battery - they usually last about a year or a little more.

In line with the subject of the thread, but in a different scenario, low batteries are not reported for either of two AirTags, paired with two different iPhones, in my vehicle. Infrequently but repeatedly, when both iPhones are in the vehicle, one or the other iPhone will report that an unknown AirTag is moving with it. I thought this wasn’t supposed to happen if the “owner” iPhone was with the AirTag. Did I misunderstand?

In another scenario (closer to but not matching what OP @ant experienced), an AirTag in travel luggage that has been sitting around will chirp when the bag is moved. Does an AirTag have some kind of inertial sensor? If not, how does the AirTag know when it has been moved? Since motion is relative, an iPhone moving near an AirTag should be the same as an AirTag moving near an iPhone, but the AirTag only chirps when it is moved. How does that work?

Thanks for any insight on these unimportant oddities.

If you’re talking about faint noise you hear after placing the AirPod buds back into their case, that’s by design and for calibration.

To help ensure that your AirPods microphones and speakers are operating at their best (for example, to help provide high-quality hearing test results), your AirPods may periodically play a quiet chime when in their charging case.

No, but thanks, Simon. It is a noise I hear with the AirPods in my ear, when I reach a certain distance from my desktop Mac, presumably loosing BlueTooth, but not sure. Chimes again when I return closer.

:smiling_face_with_three_hearts: I think it was lonely and is now happy to feel you near again
