Never seen this before, just got a notification that 1Password 7 on iOS has an update…by Apple? To prepare for watchOS 27? The update date is shown as “Feb 1, 2023.” It all just seems a bit off so I’m holding off. Anyone have an idea what’s going on here?
Sounds like phishing. I still use 1Pwd7 also - can’t run 8 (if I even wanted to). I haven’t seen any update notices on my iMac, MBP, iPhone, iPads or Watch.
It’s not phishing. Apple identified an issue with watchOS 27 that prevents some apps from running, so Apple is updating/patching the apps for developers so that they will run.
If the update is available in the App Store, then it is almost certainly legitimate.
I haven’t heard any news about hackers uploading app updates for someone else’s app. These kinds of fake-app attacks involve the attacker uploading a different app via a different Apple ID, which will not fool the App Store’s update system.
Sounds like something legit although it’s still odd to me that the update date hasn’t changed to Apple’s revision. I can only guess that’s because the original developer is only allowed to configure the date?
Just a guess on my part, but likely because Apple is changing nothing about the app but the ability of the watch app to launch on watchOS 27. Version numbers and update dates are for developers to change, I guess. I’d also say that nothing has changed at all for the iOS version of the app, or the features and functionality of the watchOS app. It’s just to patch something in the watchOS app that prevents the app from completing initial launch of watchOS 27.
What iOS version of 1Pwd7 are you using on your iPhone & iPad? I have 7.10.2 but haven’t had the App Store offer me anything except 1Pwd8 for the last few years.
Speaking of v7…I got an email from them yesterday that says early in 2027 v7 will no longer sync to other devices for subscription accounts. I’m still on v7 because I want my vault on DropBox but I do have a subs and manually backup my vault to their server. I’ve emailed them to see if v7 will still sync properly for DropBox vaults and if the manual backup to their server will still work.
I have always been standalone. When they started offering subscriptions, I crunched the numbers for a subscription over the same time average time period between major version releases (ca. 2 years). I found that going subscription, I’d end up paying almost twice what buying it standalone! This showed me it was greed behind their going subscription. I just paid the standalone price for version 7. When version 8 came out it was subscription only but I might have gone for it except for two things: their new requirement to store my data on their servers (making it easier to be stolen and/or monetized) plus it no longer ran on my iMac. So even though I’ve used 1Pwd since version 2, I will just stay with version 7 as long as it works then find another brand.
Me too. I’m ok with the encrypted data being on their servers as it o ly the encrypted vault. I also had a problem with no way to do my own backups but that’s solved as they told us where the local encrypted copy is located. Then there’s the Elektron thing instead of native macOS which isn’t a big deal to me either. The lack of ability to use DropBox was a show stopped for me and v8 so like you I’m staying on v7 until it breaks. What happens then is for me undetermined…because when I checked last year I could find zero other options that were cross platform, used DropBox, hadn’t been hacked (LastPass), and provided every feature that v7 does…because I use a lot of those features. Attachments of various sorts, secure notes with formatting are vital for the way I use the app. If/when v7 breaks then I will look again and assuming I don’t find one will reluctantly go to v8.
The basic problem with the company was that they sold a lot of it to some VC vultures and this rent really free to do what they want now…and the vultures want ROI so the company has wholeheartedly embraced enterprise…and IMO they just don’t relly care about individual users as much anymore. Sad that a company that started as Mac only has mostly abandoned their roots…but their vultures want profits. Their marketing and social media stuff is really pushing all of their AI initiatives these days.
I received the same email, and actually came here to share the news since I knew many had stayed on 1PW 7 like I had.
I don’t use the local-only vaults, my reason for not upgrading to v8 was mostly the switch to electron, but between this new notification and lack of support for passkeys in v7, think I will finally upgrade.
