I started out in 1964 programming Fortran II and assembler on IBM mainframes you’ve never heard of—unless you’re eligible for Social Security—for Defense-related and NASA-Apollo-related project scheduling and cost-control applications. Then followed 25 years of COBOL, interrupted by (in the late 1980s) dropping back into college for a quickie BA in CS, then overlapped with a night-school MS in CS. I then programmed in C++ for 8 years (3 on Mac System 7.5, 5 on Windows 95). I’ve used Retrospect since 1995, except for 2010-2014 after my old “backup server” machine died.
