I’ve asked this question multiple times in the past. The bottom line of all those discussions was, basically, it just doesn’t so deal with it.
So I do. Each time the Finder gets restarted I have to run a little AppleScript that resets all the window defaults to the values I want. And column width (since my default Finder window is set to column view) I still have to set by hand every single time because, as it turns out, the Apple Script cannot tell the Finder how to do that properly. Sigh.
I have suffered from that annoying problem for about as long as OS X has existed. I even started a thread on the topic (I’d link to it, but I think it got lost when the forum moved to Discourse) but I never really solved it. No matter what pref I deleted or which Finder workflow we tried, it never held on to my preferred settings. And nuking my entire user home just to fix this issue was not a viable option.
Ultimately, the best I could do was create an AppleScript (thread here ) which I can in…
We had a thread about this on the old TidBITS forum, but I’m afraid that got lost in the move. Anyway, short summary: whenever my Finder reboots or relaunches (or I switch from clamshell to internal or vice-versa), my first Finder window always came up all small and useless at the bottom of the screen. All the usual advice with closing all Finder windows and then opening a single Finder window and setting that right, deleting plists, deleting scores of .DS_Store files, sacrificing a goat during …
For many versions of macOS and OS X I have suffered from an issue where Finder would forget my default window preferences (size, position, column widths, etc.). On the old TidBITS comments system we had an entire thread about things to try and make it work. We went through every single thing. Nothing fixed it. It seemed though at least some others also encountered the issue (thread link ) and eventually the workaround became to write a little AppleScript app (thread link ) that would set the right…
