User-Broken Mojave Mail

A friend bought a new iMac [NEW] (macOS Mojave 10.14.6) to replace his ancient iMac [OLD] (running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8), manually copied old files to a thumb drive and put them on NEW (same directories). Now Mail is broken on the new machine.

Is it possible to reinstall Mojave Mail on NEW? I tried downloading Mojave to clean-install it, but that failed.

Manual migration is often fraught with problems.

Is all his email online and accessed via IMAP? If so, it should be possible to delete the old files and let Mail download the messages again.

The only other approach I can think of would be to run Migration Assistant again and try to migrate the data from the old Mac again, but Iā€™m not sure of the best way of saving anything new created since the original setup.
