Should I bring my iPad Air to Mexico?

Enjoy your vacation!

Plus there has to be some sort of master key or universal password to use when a guest forgets their combination or checks out without unlocking the safe. Betcha it’s not too hard to obtain either.

Enjoy your trip!

Only one person mentioned the risk of confiscation, and that was a brief mention. The voices online are screaming about that risk, and I wonder how great a risk it actually is. Custom and Border Protection says on their website that fewer than .01% (1:10,000) travelers had their devices searched, but that was in 2024.

One conference I’m attending this summer has lost many international participants because of that risk/fear. If you live by your computer hardware, it’s pretty bad to lose it to the authorities. According to all my research, the device isn’t just looked at and then given back; even CBP says it “rarely exceeds 15 days” before you see your hardware again. Do you go home, buy another, and restore from backup? ($$$$) Or do you tell your boss you can’t work for 1-2 weeks until the government returns your computer?

I think confiscation hasn’t been in this thread much because an earlier thread, with the OP as a participant, discussed it.

Thank you, @Halfsmoke I’ll read that thread!

In my case, my employer has issued my work laptop. If CBP (or some other nation’s security people) demand it, I’m expected to immediately phone our corporate security office and let them know. They will take it from there.

Of course, not everybody works for a big company with a security office capable of dealing with this…

Hey @janesprando how’d the trip go? We’re all invested now!

The trip went well—for the most part. I brought my iPad and didn’t have any problems with it. No problems with customs nor wi-fi. (I stayed on wi-fi for all calls and messages.) We had so much fun at the pool, eating, swim up bar, playing miniature golf, eating, bowling, going to shows and eating. Oh, swimming with the Dolphins, too.

The only glitch was Verizon. I called before I left to notify Verizon that I would be in Mexico. The AI “Bot” that answered the phone said I was all set and Mexico was free. Just to make sure, I talked to customer service and she repeated that there would be no additional charges. (I kept notes on date, time and who I talked to.) Well, that wasn’t true. I was charged $51.40. When I saw my bill, I called Verizon customer service and the rep said I had an old plan and Mexico wasn’t free. Well, it took me a bit to convince her that the AI '“Bot” and Mary in customer service told me it was free and I wanted a refund. I won that battle. BUT-- I had to pay for the inflated bill and get a refund on the next bill.
