Set Default for Loading Images in Safari

The latest thing that I can’t figure out how to do in Safari is to make it NOT load images by default. My searches say that there is a setting to control this default in the developer’s menu, “Develop” in the menubar. But I can’t figure out which item there to check.

Can someone please tell me how to change Safari’s default for loading images?

Thank you.

With Safari 16.6.1 (Big Sur; I don’t think Apple offers me anything newer), I see a Disable Images command under the Develop menu.

In very brief and rudimentary testing, that seemed to do it. (Safari is not my normal browser.)

I don’t believe there is a setting in Safari for that.

But curiously, there is such a setting for Mail (on iOS/iPadOS at least): Settings > Apps > Mail > Load Remote Images. Just turn it off to view your email messages without loading images. At the top of each message, it will say:

Message contains unloaded images.

I’m running Safari 18.2 under macOS 15.2 and this is what the Debug menu looks like (in two screenshots because it won’t all fit in one on a MacBook Air):

I don’t use an app to read mail; I use the web interface to Gmail.

The reason I want to turn off images in Safari is to avoid downloading cookies in my HTML Gmail.

I can’t be the only person who reads mail in Safari, can I?

If you’re using the web interface to Gmail, you can turn off image loading in the settings of the Gmail web interface. Click on the gear, then select All Settings, then:
