I predict that the new OS 27 will be named Shasta!
Well, I feel confident that “Donner Memorial” is the least likely.
It will offer a full, involuntary lockdown mode and maximum security. It will be called Pelican Bay.
California has a lot of cool-sounding location names. Looking over a few web sites, here are some that come to mind:
- “Eldorado” (National Forest)
- “Hollywood”. But only if the release is going to spotlight some new movie-oriented feature.
- “Napa” can work. And lots of good photos of wine country.
- “San Jacinto”. Maybe get permission to use the Peter Gabriel song in an ad.
- I like “Santa Cruz”
- I agree that “Shasta” can work
- Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness. Not going to happen, but “macOS Yolla Bolly” would be awesome.

Ten thumbs up!
Or maybe something from the new CEOs background. Which makes me wonder, (sorry, off topic), how the tech media are going to refer to him. We had Steve then Tim, but in the handful of blogs I’ve read about the appointment, he’s given his full name, rather than ‘John’.
Anyway, as a native Californian, having been to most of the locations already and had one (Sonoma) near my home town, I should be satisfied with the state references. Alas, the really northern geography has been sort of ignored til now. I mean, there is a lot of land north of Sonoma that would look good as Wallpaper. So maybe @paolo is on to something…
macOS 27 Eureka!
Alternatives: Modesto, Fresno, Solvang, Irvine, Oceanside. And although it’s “Baja” California – Ensenada.
I suggest Penitencia Creek (in San Jose) as a way of humbly asking for forgiveness for Tahoe. But Apple doesn’t do humble very often.
California has so many great nature sites. Devil’s Postpile. Death Valley. La Brea tar pits.
Hmm. “macOS 27 La Brea”. Now there’s a name that would really stick.

The Tar tar pits? Seriously, I grew up in the Los Angeles area, and the redundancy of the name “La Brea tar pits” always bothered me.
Well remember when Apple named the OS after beasts-?
“Condor” might also be a possible one if they go back to animals rather than areas.-But I doubt they will.
That’s fair. What do you call those tar pits?
Not being a California native, which of these make for the best desktop background wallpaper photos?
I’d say it depends on what you want in your background…urban/rural, forest/mountain/ocean/desert, natural/human-made, etc……..
Yes, while any Spanish speaker—and lots of SoCal people in general—knows La Brea Tar Pits is redundant, that’s the official name of the associated Museum as well as the landmark. SoCal English mangles a lot of names in a similar way, anyway (Los Feliz/“Los Fee-layz”, Tijuana/“Tee-ah-wah-nuh”, Palos Verdes/“Palace Vur-dees”, Los Angeles/“Los Ann-juh-lus”…).
Not me, Apple.
Local urban dialects mangle all kinds of words, from all kinds of languages.
Like people from Queens, New York who enjoy swapping “er” and “oi” sounds. Like sitting on the “terlet” and taking the trash to the “koib”.
