Looking for a low-cost, reliable Mac laptop

Hmm… I will look more into this point. Thanks.

Great news! Agreed on the iPad, just figured if it were mainly web and email it could work. I’ve had one for 10+ years and still prefer the laptop though I will take it on trips.

I adore my iPad. It’s just now new, replacing the 6-year-old one. I use it for hours a day: web surfing, email, the occasional Kindle book. I would not, however, ever consider it the equal of my 27" display with MacMini attached for serious work. Graphics, writing, coding, video-watching, all are vastly better on a workstation or laptop. (Yes, you can’t recline on the couch with a 27" monitor and cables strewn about.)

I can see why people keep demanding more and more desktop experience on their iPads for their work. An iPad Pro costs as much as a laptop and you rightly expect to do everything with it but they’re not the same. Breathless enthusiasm for the latest keyboard folio for the iPad when, er, for less money you can get a full-blown laptop is kind of odd. If a fair portion of your working life is spent in the terminal or other less arcane but still complicated things get a laptop.

One note about OWC/macsales.com. I wrote their support to ask what the battery health is of the MacBooks they sell. They replied that regardless of condition, they were all guaranteed to be at least 70%.

So they don’t refurbish with new batteries when they sell them.

Not a huge concern maybe, but something to be aware of.

I believe that Apple considers an 80% battery to be almost gone and ready for replacement. If you buy a laptop with a 70% battery, budget an additional couple of hundred for a new battery. I would not consider a laptop without a new battery to be properly “refurbished”.

As an aside, OWC/macsales.com is one of the very few sources for recently manufactured third party batteries for legacy laptops, like my beloved old mid-2012 13” MBP, soon to be running Linux Mint.

If you plan on replacing it yourself, be sure to consult iFixit for the specific model you’re getting. The procedure for some can be very easy, while others may be more work than you’re willing to attempt.

Refurbished Macs on the Apple web site are no bargain

I’d say it depends. Some other considerations other than up-front price include eligibility for AppleCare, the value you place on your time, if you enjoy tinkering and troubleshooting, the quality of the refurb process, and sellers’ customer service reputation.
