Is Apple lying about privacy?

I think differentiating app and device analytics is a monstrous cop-out—claiming to give people the choice to turn off analytics, then exempting all the stuff you give people no choice to opt out of and waving a consent dialog where the only option is “Continue” is neither right nor even close to the spirit of privacy control. But there, I’m not in the business of apologising for Apple’s every move, as certain tech journalists and publications are.

Anyway. If you’d like some sort of empirical basis on which to look at this, you could always request your own data from Apple, and then go spelunking through it for your own amusement. You’ll know exactly what Apple thinks is interesting about the way you interact with its apps and services. I say it’s too much, indeed that it is shocking how much, but it does fit the pattern of just general analytics, no different to that which Android might reasonably be expected to collect …
