iPhone and access to the NFC chip

I’m curious. What is likely to be Apple’s rationale for this apparent recalcitrance?

There are articles on the topic in 9to5 mac and PCMag, but they are essentially regurgitations of the BBC one.

I’d bet that it’s security related. If Apple opens up the NFC reader to outside developers, it’s more likely that Apple Pay could be compromised.

Android is extremely profitable for Google because it tracks everything a device owner does on it so they can sell advertising and other services. Manufacturers of Android devices charge less for them because they don’t have to do and heavy OS lifting. Privacy has become an important selling point for Apple.

Interesting. I was under the impression that Apple was opening this up in iOS 12, but I guess not.
