iPhone 16: voice messages showing up (weeks) late

iPhone 16 iOS 18.6.2, carrier is Verizon.

Twice now callers have left voice messages and the phone has not shown evidence until days later. Unfortunately both were time critical medical related calls.

Thoughts on where to begin troubleshooting?
